His car pulled into the driveway as he put the car in park he knew what was coming once he stepped into his house. He looked at the dashboard to desperately check if his parents were going to be there.
7PM. Yep, he was gonna get it and there was no avoiding it. No running straight into the room anymore. He knew he had to man up for his mistakes. He left his car and walked into the house with his head up high. He turns into the kitchen and both parents were sitting ready. The dining table turns into a makeshift interrogation room, only if they taught 'how to survive interrogation techniques' in high school things would be a little better.
All 3 in the room makes eye contact and it begins,"Son are you fucking stupid?" The first of many redundant questions to come. "How many times can you get a fucking parking ticket in a week? Is 5 even legal?!"
Too old for a beating, but never too young to hear it. "Sometimes I'm surprised you're in college honestly with all the stupid shit you do. But then again your still in college and your not even close to finishing right? Its been too long you're just wasting your time and money there. You might as well drop out and find a job because you're so stupid. We love you, but what the fuck son? Your smarter than this. Your fucking stupid for putting your family through this."
His eyes don't focus on their eyes but he looks past their heads and tries to daydream to escape this grilling. In his mind he's taken to the beach. A beautiful sunny day with a slight breeze. The water is clean as it can get. The smell of salt water floats in the air completing his memory. Then he gets slammed back to reality as his father raised his voice again to get under his skin.
"What are you doing with your life? It just seems pointless. Are you as stupid as your friends? or are you the smartest of the bunch? God dammit. Join the military, find a job, do something. Maybe college wasn't for you. We try so hard to provide but you spit it up and give it right back. We're done trying-"
"Are we done here?"
His mother and father look at each other and give a subtle nod. "Yeah we're done."
He turns around and heads towards the stairs and finally into his room. The door closes and a single tear drops from his eye. He doesn't bother to wipe it. Just another battle lost.
